Set on the hill top of the peninsula of Orta San Giulio in the middle of Lake Orta, il Conventino is a 16th Century Monastery that has been a private home since the 1860’s. Beautiful views of the island of San Giulio to the west and the open Lake Orta to the south provide picture postcard snapshots from bedroom windows. Il Conventino is set in over 8,000 m2 of terraced garden and parkland and includes over 2,000 m2 of useable residential space currently split into 1 master apartment, 4 four bedroom apartments, and 3 one bedroom apartments. The layout of the house means that it can be kept as separate apartments or opened up as a single stately home. It’s interiors still reflect the monastic background in the courtyard, kitchen and refectory located in the master apartment. The room that best captures the spirit of the past and provides an opportunity for substantial functions is the refectory with it’s stunning views from the balcony facing south over the lake. Early 17th Century frescoes on both ends of the room with an oak beamed ceiling, which is repeated through the ground floor of the master apartment. The central courtyard is also graced with two sundials and working antique clock powered by weights that use two stories with the walls to keep the clock running for 30 days.
