Among the largest of the Italian regions, Lombardy extends from the Alps to the lower Po Valley and offers a great variety of landscapes. Starting from the fascinating sceneries of the Alpine chain, with Valchiavenna, Valtellina and Valcamonica, which offer ski facilities for winter sports lovers, coming down to the hills of the famous area of Franciacorta, with its wide vineyards, that produce fine wines.
Lombardy is the Italian region with the largest number of lakes, among which the most important in terms of size are: Lake Garda, that is a favourite destination of many tourists, especially for the romantic town of Sirmione; Lake Maggiore, which with its castles, historic villas and natural parks, fascinates many visitors from all over the world; Lake Como, praised by the greatest poets of Romanticism, including Alessandro Manzoni, where there is the city with the richest historical and artistic heritage of Lario, that is Como; and finally Lake Iseo, which extends between the provinces of Brescia and Bergamo, at the bottom of Val Camonica, and is home to more than 500 different animal species. Last but not least, the lower Po Valley, crossed by lots of rivers and cultivated with rice: this is a land full of folklore and traditions.
Thanks to its geographical position and to many natural resources, Lombardy is a particularly rich land, not only for nature, art and culture, which is embedded in the art cities, like Mantua, Pavia and Bergamo, but above all for modernity and innovation, which are the main characteristics of its most important city Milan, the heart of Italian business and the main location for financial, commercial and industrial activities.
