Siena is a medieval town located in Tuscany, in the heart of Italy. It is famous for its gothic architecture, secular traditions and the famous Palio race. The historic center of Siena is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers a fascinating combination of winding streets, historic squares and majestic buildings. The Piazza del Campo is the main square, with its shell shape and the famous tower of the Palazzo Pubblico that stands in its center. Siena is famous for its Palio, an equestrian competition that takes place twice a year in the Piazza del Campo. The Contrada (representatives of the districts) compete in a frantic race on horseback to win the victory and pride for their district.
